The fort saw no combat action \u00a0although an enemy submarine was spotted offshore.<\/p>\n<p>You can grab some great views of the bay and \u00a0check out the old military bunkers.\u00a0You can also visit the remains of the colonel&#8217;s mansion. There&#8217;s not much left to it these days.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Islesboro\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldsbestwalks\/19425655350\/in\/album-72157655340790460\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/532\/19425655350_01c4af1cec_z.jpg\" alt=\"Islesboro\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a>Midcoast Maine has some great lighthouses too,\u00a0about an hour and a half north of Portland, A 15- minute ferry ride from Lincolnville to the island of Islesboro landed me at Grindle&#8217;s Point, where I braved a narrow stairwell and up a ladder to the tower overlooking Gilkey Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>Islesboro is breathtakingly beautiful and a favorite of celebrities, don&#8217;t ask me who. \u00a0I believe Kirstie Alley used to live here. \u00a0The homes are exquisite, elegant and way out of my price range. \u00a0Be sure you get back in time for the last ferry, which left at 4:30 pm on the day I visited.
